My wife was a graduate student and when she finished, she applied to the PhD program in economics at the University of Chicago. She was accepted and went on to become a PhD candidate. She graduated in 2007 and began the Ph.D. program, she earned a PhD in Economics, and she received the Ph.D. in Economics in 2011. That’s a lot of degrees.
The thing is, she didn’t get an official job offer anywhere. She was working on a research project, and she was trying to get accepted into academia so she could work for a year on her dissertation. Her advisor at the time, who is now retired, told her that it was impossible for her to get into academia because of a lack of faculty positions that would consider her PhD her degree.
The PhD candidate business card is a great idea, except for one problem. Its a job. So there are a lot of people who would be interested in hiring her, but there are also a lot of people who would not be inclined to hire her because of her lack of a post-doc position. Even if she did get an official job offer she would probably not be offered a tenure-track position, because she’d be a post-doc.
I once worked as a post-doc at a large research university. The lab we were in was a small, two-person one and we were working with a small number of scientists. We never got the memo about the PhD candidate business card, but we had to be careful not to mention it to anyone who might have asked about it.
It’s worth noting that the PhD candidate business card would have been pretty much the only thing out of curiosity to anyone in the lab that might have even noticed the existence of the card. It would have been more valuable if it was someone who had actually been assigned a job, but that never happened.
The card is the thing that would have gotten people to notice that the person was the actual person with the PhD. So even if it had been in the lab, the name would have been a little more obvious than the fact that someone was a PhD candidate. But again, the only useful thing about the card is that it would have been useful to anyone who asked about it.
