But I’m not sure if it really allows us to speak the same language as everyone else. If you already have a brain-computer-interface device, you can still communicate with your brain by typing messages into it. The device can only communicate with the brain that it is connected to, so it may not be able to understand you or your intentions. If you don’t have a brain-computer-interface device, you can still “talk” to your brain by physically touching it.
While many people have a device implanted inside their skull (referred to as a “brain chip” or “brain-computer-interface”), other people use a more low-tech approach. These people wear an electrode called a “brain-sensor” on their head that monitors their brain activity. This allows them to make calls and communicate with people who have lost the ability to speak or understand them. And while there are several companies that sell these devices, they are often not very affordable.
In December the New York City-based startup facilis, which makes its own brain-sensors, released its first product: a pair of brain sensors called ‘Brain-Sensors.’ The company expects to sell about 15,000 of them in the United States this year. The sensors are battery-powered, so they won’t run out on you, but they do require you to wear them for an extensive period of time.
