I think the writer should not just take over and tell the story, but give the story some structure. That means something like a beginning, middle, and end. I also think it is important to keep the reader in the story even when the story is off-track because that lets the reader know where they are in the story. For example, I was reading a story where a character was in a car accident and the story became very off-track as the reader got confused.
Also, the story should definitely have a name, and it must be something that tells the reader exactly where they are. This can be accomplished by having a name that says something important about the story, but isn’t the name of the character.
I’m not sure who actually named the story, but the story should be named something that is representative of those who died in the story. For example, if the story is about a reporter, i.e., a newspaper reporter, then its name should be something like “Reporter’s Life”. If it is about a character in the story, its name should be something like “Charley’s Life”. The point is that the reader should be able to tell when its off-track.
