What is a rough order of magnitude estimate?

A rough order of magnitude estimate, or an “ROE” as it’s also known, can be referred to as a __ estimate.

An ROE is used when you want to make an approximation about something without calculating the exact answer.

This type of estimation technique requires that you have some knowledge about the subject.

Then use your intuition to come up with a number that will probably be close enough for what you need it for.

An example would be if we wanted to know how many oranges there were in our fruit bowl on Monday morning.

But didn’t want to go through all the trouble of counting them one by one until they are exhausted.

We could take a look around at other things and try estimating from those items instead.
